One of the most successful products available for cellphones, Smart Messages, are Short Message Services (SMS) delivering special features such as ringtones, picture messages and operator logos which users canb use to personalise the look and sound of their cellphones. Such is the demand for these products that the range is updated weekly.
In South Africa these products are grouped under the Mobile Magic brand. They work off an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) platform where callers dial an 082 number and are prompted by voice commands to download the products of their choice.
Websites use iTouch's Smart Messaging service to increase visitor numbers and publications offer it as a value-added service to their readers. In doing so they generate income because of the shared revenue the line generates.
Ringtones
More than 1 500 ringtones are available for Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson cellphone users. They are split among 15 categories including movie soundtracks, TV theme-songs, pop (sub-divided by decade), Afrikaans music, kids, sport, romantic, traditional, jazz, classical, Indian, special occasion tunes, whacky and Christmas.
Operator Logos
About 1 800 logos from 17 categories are available. These include names, cartoons, sport, animals, corporate, horoscopes, political parties, cities, Christmas, New Year, religious, Japanese symbols, decorative, surfing, and love.
Picture Messages
About 650 messages, which users can send to their friend's cellphones, are available in six categories ranging from friendship, love, whacky and new baby.
Group Graphics
This product enables cellphone users to group names in mobile phonebooks under pictorial categories. These include Wacky Family, Lovers, Friends, Grumpy, Cartoon, and Sport.
Screensavers
The Screensaver is in essence an operator logo that is displayed on your handset when your phone is not in use
- just like the screensaver on your PC monitor.
The screensaver service is available to both Vodacom and MTN subscribers with Nokia 3310 and 3330 cellphones.
